Ye Notorious Krewe of the Peg Leg Pirate was notified by a member that she needed help for her friend and the town of Petal, MS. The small town is located approximately 80 miles north of Biloxi and is a heavily timbered area.
The Krewe got busy and collected both cash and in-kind donations. A work party of Krewe members and some friends headed to Petal on Thursday morning, Sept. 8th. They had a Jeep that was completely full as well as a large pick-up truck and a U-Haul trailer loaded with supplies for the folks in Petal.
They met the town Mayor and the Pastor of the local church to find out how they could help. The Mayor and Pastor were organized and working very hard with the town members to cope with the disaster. They reported that all the donations and help they had received to that date was only from private donors. The spirit of the people was remarkable. They were positive and working to clean up their own places and those of their neighbors.
The Krewe went to work with chain saws and tarps. Large tree branches were cut down and removed from roofs and from yards. The roofs were tarped when necessary (and many were). Time was spent delivering food, water and supplies to those in the town that could not get to the small distribution center.
